Road to Morocco

Oh yes, thats right, you better believe it bucko, its true….we are back!!! After a much longer than anticipated hiatus (pesky Covid!) Three Men and a Tent (TMAAT) are getting ready for another epic adventure! There are some changes I need to tell regular readers about (please read on) but we are definitely back, we have an adventure planned, it is soon and it is double, if not triple, bigly!

It has previously been suggested that from time to time I can be prone to hyperbole on this blog (fair, I suppose!) and perhaps on occasion there can even be a little bit of a “amateur dramatics” (harsh, but on balance also mostly fair) this time though I promise you, full drama is needed and our chosen challenge is absolutely off the scale, insane. If I could work out how to add it to the website there would be video and music here and it would feature Elton John in a sparkly tutu, dangling from the ceiling with fireworks coming out of him from every angle and all to the theme from Space Odyssey…and even then I am not sure that would be dramatic enough!

Ok so here it is…….WE ARE CYCLING TO AFRICA!!!!

Nope …that is not a typo. On April 30 we cycle off from London and, if all goes to plan, two and a bit weeks later, having pedalled our way across 1400 miles of France and Spain we will take a short ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar and roll onto the continent of Africa in the form of Tangier, Morocco. To be honest just typing this now makes it feel both pant wettingly exciting and vomit inducingly scary all at the same time.

So, some “changes”…..well the first and most significant is that “Three Men and Tent” will actually be “Two men and a Tent” this time around. I really am genuinely sad to report, despite his seemingly limitless capacity to break everything he looks at, that Dan isn’t able to join us this time. Unfortunately balancing a young family with work and his other commitments has meant he simply could not make the dates work no matter how hard we tried. Its a big disappointment for all three of us and it just wont be the same without you Dan…….it will be so much better!! I am of course joking, its a big, big miss. For all you “Dan Fans” (the mind boggles!) Dan is though planning his own fundraising challenge that he will undertake at the same time …more about that another time, so watch this space!

In another change, and as a nod of respect to our absent hero, Marc and I offered Dan the chance to choose which charity he would like us to support this time around. You can read more about his decision here and we are delighted to confirm that this year all your donations will go to Prostate Cancer UK.

The final, and not insignificant, change to mention is the fact that a global pandemic has not been kind to my waistline nor my overall fitness. It has been three full years since the end of our last big challenge when we arrived at the Trevi Fountain in Rome and when (if?) we complete this challenge I will be within 5 weeks of my 55th birthday (you are too kind and you are absolutely right, I don’t look old enough but it is a fact!). I do of course realise that some of this could also probably be said by many of you reading this now but I am guessing you are not planning to CYCLE TO AFRICA!!!!

As usual we will be trying hard to give you daily updates via this website once we set off. I have obviously had a lot of time to read back over our previous attempts and, not unexpectedly, it’s pretty clear that when I get tired (and OMG I do get tired!) my spelling and grammar takes a nasty downward turn. What I hadn’t clocked until now though is that tiredness also seems to mean that I am only ever 5 minutes away from sobbing like an emotionally incontinent toddler…..I will try to do better.

Ok so as always please, please don’t forget to visit our Just Giving page to donate, follow us @3menandatent and share the hell out of it. Donate, Follow, Share……DFS.!

“Marc! Dan!….DFS!!! DFS…I have made a social media thingy….this is how we go virus!”
